Chuck and Duck

Well, we knew it would be a chuck and duck kind of day with the generation schedule and it was that all day. Put in at Happy, ran up and floated down throwing 250 and 350 grain lines with various streamers.

We saw a lot of fish but only had one hit and one hook up. My hook up was a nice football sized bow that unhitched near the boat.

Finally, back near the takeout, we anchored up with enjoy a libation and shoot the shit when we saw some fishing rising. Being that Gordie had a 6 weight rigged with floating line, we watched the water and saw they were eating something gray. I grabbed my dry fly box and the closest I had was a Griffiths Gnat. He tied that on and after a dozen or so casts missed the first take and then after a few more drifts coaxed one to take his fly. A nice little bow on a dry on the Caney under generation. Go figure.

To quote Gordie, "Some days is not about the fish, it is about the fishing."

As always, a great day on the water.

Fishing. Finally.

With all the projects at work lately it seems all I have been doing is dreaming about fishing and tying flies to fuel my passion. Finally, this week, I planned some smallmouth fishing with my bud Sam. We coordinated all efforts and lined up the day. When Thursday finally arrived, what happened? A nice front started rolling through and dumping rain on Middle TN. This didn't quell our thirst for fishing and we hardily agreed that unless there was lightning involved, we would be on the water rain or shine.

At the end of the day, the rain past by and the skies stayed cloudy but dry. We headed to the secret water and arrived to find it looking like a light colored chocolate milk. Again, no problems, just go at it. We waded in and threw streamers and got some short strikes but no fish. I changed up and went to a smaller pattern and BAM! fish on. Then as quick as that came it went away. As we moved down river, we swapped the fly rod for an ultralight and threw some Gulp minnows Tejas style. Got some hits and landed some fish but this front and the off colored water really dampened this usually great water.

As dusk approached, we waded back up the river and enjoyed the scenery and peacefulness of our surroundings and how the water makes you feel alive even though the results were not what you really wanted.

In the end, we had a ball and spending time with a friend is good. We also swapped patterns and life stories and vowed to back at them when the water cleared up.

Been away but in a good way.

It has been very busy at work lately and even working on the weekend. All this is good but I just need to get some fishing time in and I did this weekend. I did a little wading in a nearby river for smallies. Had some good luck and enjoyed the time out even though it was hot.

With the Tropical depression making landfall and heading towards TN, looks like more rain and generation on the way.

This weeks seems like it will be better and I will hopefully get some tying and maybe a little fishing in before the weather gets to wet.
